Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were convicted of driving motor vehicles uninsured in Scotland in 1968 and 1969; and what was the average fine.

Mr. Ross

8,766 persons were convicted of using, or causing or permitting another person to use, a motor vehicle without insurance in Scotland during 1968. Where a fine was imposed, the average amount was £8 16s.

Information for 1969 is not yet available but corresponding figures for the period 1st January to 30th September. 1969 are 6,716 and £9 15s.
