HC Deb 26 March 1970 vol 798 cc553-4W
Mr. McMaster

asked the President of the Board of Trade what progress he has made towards transferring the ownership and management of Aldergrove Airport to the Northern Ireland Government, avoiding the closure of the airport when the main runway is reshaped; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mason

The Government are fully aware of the major contribution this airport makes to the external communications of Northern Ireland and share the view of the Northern Ireland Government that under local control the development of the airport can be more quickly and conveniently integrated with general economic and physical planning.

I am glad to say that I have agreed with the Northern Ireland Minister of Development the main financial and other terms of transfer. Although some other aspects remain to be dealt with, notably the future of those employed there, it is our joint resolve to make the transfer effect on 1st April, 1971.

The arrangements that we contemplate for interim development should avoid the necessity of closing the airport during the period that the main runway is reshaped.
