asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (1) How many summonses for alleged offences, committed in the first six months of 1969—in the metropolitan police area—still remain to be heard by the appropriate courts.
  2. (2) The average length of time between the date of the alleged offence and the application by the metropolitan police for a summons.
  3. (3) The average time between the issue of a summons and the adjudication by the court.

THE LORD CHANCELLOR

  1. (1) Approximately 1860. This includes cases adjourned sine die, summonses marked "not served" and cases where warrants of arrest have been issued but not yet executed.
  2. (2) The available statistics relate to the court to which application is made, and the average varies, according to the court, between 1½ and 12 weeks.
  3. (3) The average varies, according to the court, between 3 and 20 weeks.
