asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will state the current annual cost of maintaining British presence in the island of Antigua; and with what power of Sanctions the Governor is endowed to enforce any necessary decisions.

LORD SHEPHERD

The cost of maintaining the Office of the Deputy British Government Representative in Antigua is estimated to be some £25,000 per annum. The Deputy British Government Representative is on the staff of the British Government Representative, who is stationed in St. Lucia, and through whom relations between the British Government and the Governments of the Associated States of the Eastern Caribbean are con ducted.

The Government of Antigua are responsible for the internal affairs of the Associated State of Antigua, and the Governor acts in these matters on the advice of Antigua Ministers. The cost of the Governor's office is met by the Government of Antigua.
