asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were convicted of driving motor vehicles untaxed in 1968 and 1969; and what was the average fine.

In England and Wales there were 63,374 and 76,667 convictions in 1968 and 1969 respectively for using or keeping unlicensed vehicles on public roads. The average amounts of the excise penalties imposed were £7 5s. 6d. and £7 11 s. 6d. respectively.
