HC Deb 24 March 1970 vol 798 c336W
82. Mr. Donald Williams

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what is the estimated increase in average house prices in the five years since 1964; and what was the equivalent figure for the five years previous to that.

Mr. Freeson

The average price of new dwellings mortgaged by private owners with building societies in Great Britain increased by 41 per cent. between 1959 and 1964, and 40 per cent. between 1964 and 1969.

98. Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will estimate the average percentage increase in the price of houses as a result of the selective employment tax.

Mr. Freeson

I estimate that Selective Employment Tax adds about 3¾ per cent. to the construction cost of dwellings, but the price is not necessarily affected to the same degree.
