§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Prime Minister whether he will publish in HANSARD details of the rise and fall in the number of official staff employed at No. 10 Downing Street, and the total wage and salary bills involved for each year from October, 1964 to January, 1970, and similar details for the same period preceding October, 1964.
§ The Prime MinisterFor staff numbers and salary costs in October, 1964, I would refer my hon. Friend to my reply to a Question by him on 26th July, 1968. For changes between then and January, 1970, the information is the same as that given in the reply of my right hon. Friend the Minister Without Portfolio to a Question by the hon. Member for Aberdeenshire, East (Mr. Wolrige-Gordon) on 26th January. In October, 1959 the number of staff was 37 and the annual salary cost was about £44,000. To provide similar details for each intervening year would involve disproportionate cost.—[Vol. 769, c. 221–2 and Vol. 794, c. 266.]
