HC Deb 19 March 1970 vol 798 c186W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT details showing the total number of ancillary staff appointed to primary schools when the service began, the nature of their duties and the annual cost in each of the six largest education authorities in Scotland.

Mr. Ross

The numbers of ancillary staff in education authority primary schools have built up gradually and in January, 1969 amounted to 455 full-time and 228 part-time employees. Their duties vary from school to school but mainly consist of assisting teachers with those aspects of their work which do not require professional skills. Details of the annual expenditure of education authorities on ancillary staff in primary schools are not available.
