HC Deb 19 March 1970 vol 798 cc184-5W
Mr. Monro

asked the Minister of Technology (1) for how many years he estimates that the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority establishment at Chapelcross will produce electricity for the South of Scotland Electricity Board;

(2) what is the life of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority establishment at Chapelcross as an electricity generating station.

Dr. Ernest A. Davies

The A.E.A. inform me that there is no technical reason why the Chapelcross power station should not continue in operation for many years but that its life will be determined by economic factors. In time it will become gradually more difficult for the station to compete with newer and more advanced power stations.

Subject to continued satisfactory operation Chapelcross will be producing electricity for the South of Scotland Electricity Board until at least 1976, when the current supply contract expires.
