HC Deb 18 March 1970 vol 798 c142W
Mr. Wingfield Digby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he is aware that the present education and maintenance allowances paid to members of the Armed Forces with children at boarding school do not meet the costs involved; and if he will increase the allowances so as to bring them more into line with costs incurred.

Mr. Hattersley

The purpose of education allowances is to provide financial assistance to parents who choose to give their children boarding school education. The allowances are not designed to cover the full costs incurred. The rates are reviewed annually to ensure they keep in line with movements in school fees.
