HC Deb 17 March 1970 vol 798 c95W
Mr. Woof

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many colliery tips in Durham and Northumberland counties have been removed, or otherwise cleared, and the acreage of land reclaimed with the assistance of public funds; at what costs; and how many such tips remain to be removed.

Mr. Greenwood

Since 1960, 40 schemes for the reclamation of colliery tips in Durham and Northumberland affecting 1,043 acres at a cost of £1,220,000 have been completed by local authorities with the aid of Government grants. The bulk of this work has been carried out since the passing of the Industrial Development Act, 1966. 265 tips remain, in the two counties of which 46 are in active use.
