HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc2-3W
67. Mr. Onslow

asked the Minister of Technology what is his latest estimate of the total number of graduate engineers and scientists employed in the British aerospace industry; and what proportion of this total is employed by his Department.

Mr. Carmichael

The total number of persons holding degree or equivalent qualifications in engineering, technology and science employed in the larger firms in the aerospace industry in January, 1968 is estimated at 7,185. This is 300 higher than at the time of the previous manpower survey in January, 1965. In addition, at 1st February, there were about 2,400 Q.S.E.s in, or associated with, the aerospace establishments of the Department.

68. Mr. Onslow

asked the Minister of Technology what estimate he has formed of the export earnings of the British aerospace industry in the years 1970, 1971 and 1972, respectively.

Mr. Carmichael

Recorded exports for the aerospace industry reached a peak level of approximately £300 million in 1969: the industry and the Department are hopeful that this level will on average be maintained or surpassed in the next three years.
