HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc27-8W
Mr. Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of births in England and Wales in the second and third quarters of 1969 where the mother, and the father but not the mother, was recorded as born in the new Commonwealth.

Mr. Crossman

The figures published in the Registrar General's Quarterly Return show that there were 28,482 live births registered in the second and third quarters of 1969 where the mother, or the father but not the mother, was recorded as born in the New Commonwealth.

Mr. Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services of how many of the 6,453 legitimate and 18,954 illegitimate children born in England and Wales in the second and third quarters of 1969, whose mothers were not recorded as born in the new Commonwealth, he estimates that the fathers were born in the new Commonwealth.

Mr. Crossman

Such an estimate is not possible from the information available.

Mr. Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in what proportion of the births in England and Wales in the second and third quarters of 1969 where either parent was recorded as born in the new Commonwealth, he estimates that such parent was of United Kingdom descent.

Mr. Crossman

Information on origin as distinct from birthplace is not collected, but it has been estimated that in the great majority of births where only one parent was New Commonwealth born that parent was of United Kingdom origin.

Mr. Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what, to the nearest digit per cent., was the proportion of live births in England and Wales in the second and third quarters of each of the last five years to the total number of such births.

Mr. Crossman
