HC Deb 11 March 1970 vol 797 c304W
24. Mr. Newens

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to prevent the destruction of hedges where this is likely to result in soil erosion.

Mr. Mackie

Removal of hedgerows rarely leads directly to soil erosion but in any case where such a result is likely our officers would take any opportunity open to them of advising against it. The decision, of course, rests with the farmer himself. The results of our investigation of the general problem of erosion in East Anglia and elsewhere have been brought to the attention of farmers through the Ministry's publication and other suitable ways.
