Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what number of county council houses and croft houses, respectively, have been started in each of the Islands of Barra, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist and Harris, including Scalpay, since March, 1964; how many in each of those islands have been completed; and how many in each island are in course of construction.

No new schools were completed but the total approved cost of alterations and extensions to existing schools was £134,700. My Department make no direct financial contribution towards local authorities' capital expenditure on educational building. Central Government assistance for revenue expenditure, including loan charges, is given through the rate support grant.
