asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will increase grants to the living arts.

Between 1963–64 and 1969–70 the grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain rose from £2.7 million to £8.2 million, an increase of 203 per cent. In the same period funds made available to the Scottish Arts Council increased by 372 per cent. from £175,000 to £836,000. In the financial year 1970–71 grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain will be £9.3 million, a further increase over the previous year of 13.4 per cent.

The Government will continue in the future to attach great importance to the support of the arts.
