HC Deb 09 March 1970 vol 797 c239W
Dr. Winstanley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average age of the members of the independent schools tribunals; what are the ages of the youngest and the oldest members of the tribunals, respectively; and what provisions exist for the removal of members from the tribunals on the grounds of age or incapacity.

Mr. Edward Short

The average age of the members of the legal and educational panels from which independent schools tribunals are constituted is 60 years. The youngest member is 49 and the oldest 69. There are no statutory provisions for the removal of members from the panels but the Lord Chancellor and the Lord President of the Council appoint members of the legal and educational panels respectively for a limited period (at present three years) and review appointments towards the end of that time. Among other things, age is then taken into account.
