§ Mr. Dickensasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the additional cost to the Exchequer of an increase in family allowances to 34s. per week, tax free, for the second and subsequent child, assuming the abolition of income tax allowances for children and the increased revenue transferred to family allowances, and of where the break-even point falls.
§ Mr. TaverneAbout £130 million assuming child allowance remains for the first child. The break-even point would vary widely according to circumstances but the lowest level of income at which it would occur in the case of a married couple with 2 children over 16 is above £5,400.
