HC Deb 05 March 1970 vol 797 cc149-50W
71. Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the fact that the actual strength of the police force in the West Yorkshire Constabulary is only 75 to 80 per cent. of the authorised establishment, he will call for a report from the chief constable on the steps he intends to take to bring the police force up to the required strength.

Mr. Callaghan

I have been in touch with all police authorities and chief constables in England and Wales on the subject of recruitment. In West Yorkshire, where the importance of the matter is fully appreciated, recruitment already shows sign of improvement. The recent announcement of an interim increase in police pay of 8½ per cent. with a further increase next September will help to attract more men and to retain those who are already serving.
