asked the Minister of Transport what is the total sum spent by the central Government on roads in England in the post-war period.

Mr. Mulley

The total is of the order of £2,150 million of this almost £1,100 million has been spent since the end of 1964–65. Expenditure on lighting and car parks is not included.

In addition, since 1st April, 1967, financial assistance towards local authorities expenditure on roads has been given through the general rate support grant.
