Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Minister of Transport if he will introduce new legislation to allow payment of compensation for disturbance to persons of occupied houses on the fringe of motorway development; if he will consider a new definition of blighted property; and if he will make a statement.

asked the Minister of Transport if he will introduce legislation to increase the power of local authorities to make offers for the purchase of property on the fringe of motorway development; and if he will make a statement.

No. If such legislation is suggested in order to enable new motorways to be better related to their surroundings, we must wait for the report of the Committee on Urban Motorways which is at present considering this question. If, on the other hand, my hon. Friend has in mind a form of compensation, I have nothing to add to what my hon. Friend the Minister of State for Housing and Local Government said on this subject on Friday, 27th February during his speech on the Second Reading of the Planning Blight Worsenment Bill. —[Vol. 796, c. 1541–1638.]
