HC Deb 22 July 1970 vol 804 c147W
94. Mr. Fernyhough

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total amount received by local authorities in 1969 in housing subsidies and the number of houses involved; and what was the cost to the Treasury of income tax relief on interest on mortgages and the number of houses covered.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

In 1969–70 local authorities received nearly the whole of the £163 million paid in subsidies to housing authorities and associations in Great Britain. Subsidies were payable towards nearly all the 5.4 million dwellings owned by local authorities. Tax relief on mortgage interest totalled about £215 million for the whole United Kingdom and applied to about 4½ million dwellings. The figure for local authorities does not, of course, include rate fund contributions.
