HL Deb 22 July 1970 vol 311 cc1059-60WA
LORD HOLFORD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

For how many Grade I buildings permission to demolish has been sought and given since the passing of the Town and Country Planning Act 1947, and what the buildings were.

LORD SANDFORD

Figures, which relate to England, are available only from May, 1964. Since that date there have been twelve proposals for the complete demolition of statutorily listed buildings in Grade I, of which five were allowed. One of these was London Bridge, to be re-erected in the U.S.A.; three were for buildings stated to be in a dangerous structural state (Gatehouse, BeaupréHall, Outwell, Norfolk; Abbey Gate House, Kingswood, Gloucestershire; Tithe Barn, Thetford, Norfolk), and one was in ruins after a fire (Dunsland House, Holsworthy, Devon). There are just under 5,000 buildings in Grade I on the statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

House adjourned at seven minutes past seven o'clock.
