LORD O'HAGAN

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What estimate they now make of the number of United Kingdom citizens who, if they attempted to enter this country, would be subject to the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968; and whether they will give separate estimates for each country in which these British subjects reside.

THE MARQUESS OF LOTHIAN

The total number of United Kingdom citizens in foreign and independent Commonwealth countries who are subject to control under the Commonwealth Immigrants Acts of 1962 and 1968 is estimated to be between 300–320,000, distributed as follows:

Kenya 90–100,000
Uganda 40,000
Tanzania 20,000
Zambia 9,000
Malawi 6,000
Malaysia 110,000
Singapore 30,000
Caribbean 1,000
South Yemen (Aden) 1,500

There is also a small but unknown number of United Kingdom citizens of Maltese origin in countries around the Mediterranean littoral.
