HC Deb 29 January 1970 vol 794 c386W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will, as a means of resolving the teachers' dispute, increase the salaries by an amount sufficient to give an increase of 35 per cent. since November, 1967.

Mr. Edward Short

Teachers' salaries are negotiated in the Burnham Committee, where it is for the management panel as a whole, on which, with the local authorities, I am represented, to decide the terms of any offer. I have neither the power nor the wish to determine them myself.
