HC Deb 29 January 1970 vol 794 cc381-2W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity whether she is aware that since November, 1967, the Chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board has had his salary increased from £4,800 to £6,000 per annum and that in 11 months a further increase of 10 per cent. has been made; whether she is satisfied that these increases complied with the prices and incomes policy; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Dell

The increase in salary from £4,800 to £6,000 per annum was made in consequence of the extension of the Chairman's duties from a part-time to a full-time basis. Increases in pay arising from additional work performed are permitted by the prices and incomes policy.

The further increase of 10 per cent. was made as part of a general review of the salaries of chairmen of public boards, following the recommendations of the National Board for Prices and Incomes in its Report No. 107 on "Top Salaries in the Private Sector and Nationalised Industries".

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what discussions she or her Department have had with bodies outside the Civil Service regarding the various increases in the salary of the Chairman of the Horserace Betting Levy Board; and whether this included the recent further increase of 10 per cent.

Mr. Dell

None.
