asked the Minister of Transport what steps he has taken to ensure that as far as possible local labour will be employed in the construction of the new Hylton Bridge over the River Wear.

It is not the Ministry's practice to require its contractors for highway works to employ local labour but in so far as suitable labour is available locally, contractors should find it advantageous to employ them.
