asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer in view of the fact that it is more advantageous for many couples to live in sin than to marry because of the present income tax regulations, if he will consider allowing husband and wife to decide as to how they want to have their income tax assessed.

Mr. Taverne

The present system is more favourable for the great majority of married couples than taxing them as two single people. I have, however, noted the hon. Lady's suggestion.
