HC Deb 23 January 1970 vol 794 c224W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what official study is being made of the link between taking too many analgesics, particularly phenacetin, phenazone, caffeine and phenylbutazone, and the incidence of tumours of the renal pelvis.

Dr. John Dunwoody

No official study is being carried out. The medical and pharmaceutical professions are fully aware of the dangers of kidney damage arising from the excessive and prolonged use of preparations containing phenacetin, and of the potential risks of self-medication with these preparations over long periods.
