HC Deb 22 January 1970 vol 794 cc171-2W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity how many training centres are available for training and retraining in Nottinghamshire; and if she will consider increasing the number in view of the need to deal with unemployment in the country.

Mr. Dell

There are no Government training centres actually situated in Nottinghamshire. The need for further centres is kept under constant review but at present demand in the area for the accelerated training for skill provided in such centres is satisfactorily served by the existing Centres at Long Eaton and Sheffield. Most of the training or retraining required by unemployed workers is at semi-skilled operator level and this is best given by their new employers.

My hon. Friend will be aware that in the parts of Nottinghamshire which are shortly to be designated an intermediate area direct government training grants are now available to firms which train workers for new jobs.
