HC Deb 22 January 1970 vol 794 c178W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware of the serious and often fatal consequences of inadequate labelling of textiles used for children's night clothes; if he will introduce legislation to strengthen the law on safety labelling; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

There would be great practical difficulties in requiring such materials sold by the piece to be labelled if not flame-resistant. No materials are marketed solely for the purpose; and some do not have a selvedge on which a warning could be printed. A good deal of publicity is promoted by safety and consumer organisations and by the Home Office to inform the public as to which are the safer materials, and on the importance of using fireguards. Retailers are also cooperating by offering advice to their customers. All children's nightdresses on sale in this country are required to be made from flame-resistant material.
