HC Deb 22 January 1970 vol 794 cc178-9W
Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what representations have been made to him by municipal corporations concerning arcades where amusements with prizes are provided either by means of machines or prize bingo, that the allowing of appeals by the courts does not take account of the assessment of social needs by which the discretion of local authorities was exercised; and what steps he proposes to take.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

My right hon. Friend has received representations from nine local authorities to this effect. The Association of Municipal Corporations recently sent further information which he is considering.

Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the response by municipal authorities to the request made by him to collect information about the social effects of arcades where amusements with prizes are provided either by means of machines or prize bingo.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

The increase in the number of these arcades is a recent development and municipal authorities have not as yet been able to collect much information about their social effects, but my right hon. Friend proposes to keep in close touch with the Association of Municipal Corporations.
