HC Deb 20 January 1970 vol 794 cc85-6W
35. Mr. Kenneth Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the effect on the cost of living of abolishing the sixpenny piece.

Mr. Taverne

There need be no effect on the cost of living.

Mr. John Hall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in view of the recent evidence that the abolition of the 6d. on decimalisation will be the cause of greater increases in prices than would otherwise be the case, he will consider retaining this coin.

Mr. Taverne

No. We have seen no such evidence.
