HC Deb 27 February 1970 vol 796 cc436-7W

Commander Pursey asked the Minister of Transport (1) on what date Castle Street, the through highway from East to West Hull, was closed to vehicular traffic and pedestrians; what were the reasons for the closure; and on what date this closure, which adds to the traffic congestion in the city centre, will be ended;

(2) what will be the effect of the closure of Castle Street, Hull, when the Corporation construct the extension of the new highway, connecting with the two dual-carriageways now nearing completion from Ferensway and Hessle Road, which is in his Department's approved programme commencing this year;

(3) what sum was included in the loan sanction for the new through highway from East to West Hull, along Castle Street, for the cost of propping up the derelict and dangerous No. 7 Warehouse, during the new roadworks, pending the decision to demolish the warehouse.

Mr. Mulley

I understand that Castle Street was closed on 8th November last by an Order under the Public Health Act, 1961, because a warehouse owned by the British Transport Docks Board was unsafe. It is uncertain when the street will be re-opened but it is expected to be before Hull C.B.C. proceeds with its scheme for stage 2 of the Southern Orbital Road from Myton Place to Market Place along the line of Castle Street. No loan sanction has been issued for that scheme.
