asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he is now taking to improve the standards of teacher training.

Mr. Edward Short

While I regard many recent criticisms of teacher training as misconceived, I have invited the area training organisations to review, in consultation with representatives of the teaching profession, the structure and content of the courses they now offer. I have asked them to let me have a report within the next year on the changes they propose to introduce as the result of their reviews.
