HC Deb 26 February 1970 vol 796 cc389-90W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity what recent action she has taken to encourage employment and productivity in the London Borough of Newham; how far this will obviate industry and commerce moving away from the borough; and whether she will agree to meet a deputation on behalf of the borough to discuss problems connected with trade, employment and productivity in this area.

Mr. Dell

The Manpower and Productivity Service of my Department has made a number of advisory contacts with local firms in order to increase the effective use of manpower. The employment services at my local offices in the borough have been active in finding jobs for people who have become unemployed for redundancy or other reasons. In the larger redundancies, special employment teams have usually gone into the factories to interview workers before their jobs came to an end.

I do not feel that a meeting on the lines suggested by my hon. Friend would be useful at the present time.
