HC Deb 24 February 1970 vol 796 cc298-9W
87. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the President of the Board of Trade what civil aircraft have been making proving flights into Ballykelly; by what companies they are owned; what type of aircraft was used; and with what result.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

There have been no recent proving flights by civil aircraft into Ballykelly.

88. Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the President of the Board of Trade what civil aircraft have been making proving flights into Sydenham; by what companies they are owned; what type of aircraft was used; and with what result.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

One proving flight by a Trident 2 aircraft has been carried out by British European Airways who have reported that with some minor improvements to technical facilities Sydenham should be operationally suitable for use by their Trident, Vanguard and Viscount aircraft.

Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the President of the Board of Trade, when considering alternative or diversionary airports in Northern Ireland, what estimate he has formed of the number of days in each year upon which the airfields at Ballykelly and Sydenham are fog and industrial-haze free, respectively; and on how many occasions in the past 12 months up until 18th February it has been impossible to land an aircraft at each one.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

Meteorological data are not readily available in the form requested. I am having such information as is available collated and will write to the hon. Member. I am, however, advised that both airfields would be acceptable in these rôles from the aspect of weather.
