HC Deb 23 February 1970 vol 796 c232W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will take the necessary action to enable Mr. Surindre Sharma to come to this country for a temporary period to have an eye operation at Moorfields Eye Hospital to save his sight, on the financial guarantees of his brother Mr. Tilak Sharma, a school teacher in the London Borough of Newham.

Dr. Dunwoody

Provided that the hospital received a medical report indicating that Mr. Surindre Sharma could benefit from treatment there, that the immigration authorities are satisfied that sufficient funds to meet the cost of his treatment as a private patient are available and that the usual form of undertaking to pay the hospital charge is signed by him or on his behalf, he would be allowed to enter this country for a temporary period to receive the treatment. The best course would be for Mr. Sharma to present the necessary evidence on these points to the entry certificate officer at his nearest British High Commission.
