asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the concern felt by magistrates and others, he will provide further facilities for the detention of young people on remand or awaiting transfer to borstals; and if he will make a statement.

As indicated in paragraph 192 of the White Paper "People in Prison" (Cmnd. 4214), the long-term building programme includes the provision of additional places in remand centres, and two new borstal allocation centres. My right hon. Friend shares the concern that has been expressed about the problems resulting from the recent increase in the number of young men committed to custody and is considering whether any further measures can be taken to alleviate them.
