HC Deb 20 February 1970 vol 796 c200W
Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the treaties or agreements under which the United Kingdom is committed to give military aid in specified circumstances to Australia, Ceylond and New Zealand.

Mr. Luard

The United Kingdom has no treaty obligation to provide military assistance specifically for the defence of Australia and New Zealand. However, with Australia and New Zealand the United Kingdom is a party to the South East Asia Collective Defence Treaty, Manila, 8th September, 1954 (Cmnd. 265), which would involve provision of military assistance in specified circumstances in the treaty area.

In the case of Ceylon the relevant treaty is the Defence Agreement of 11th November, 1947 (Cmnd. 7257).
