HC Deb 19 February 1970 vol 796 c173W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will take steps to ensure that on conviction for premeditated murder, a life sentence for the rest of the natural life of the convicted murderer must be imposed by the courts.

Mr. Elysian Morgan

A sentence of life imprisonment, or, in the case of an offender under 18, of detention for life, is already mandatory in respect of a conviction for murder. As I said in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Cheltenham (Mr. Dodds-Parker) on 22nd January, my right hon. Friend proposes to invite the Criminal Law Revision Committee to review the law on offences against the person, including homicide. This will afford an opportunity for a review of the penalty. —[Vol. 794, c. 179–80.]
