asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the purchasing power of the £1 sterling on 1st February, 1958, 1963, 1967 and 1970, respectively.

Taking the internal purchasing power of the £ sterling as 20s. 0d. in February, 1958, its estimated values in February, 1963, February, 1967, and December, 1969, were 17s. 10d., 15s. 7d. and 13s. 10d. respectively. December, 1969, is the latest month for which information is available.

These estimates are based on movements in the consumer price index for calendar years, adjusted to values for particular months by the index of retail prices.
