HC Deb 18 February 1970 vol 796 c136W
Miss Quennell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food from which cities or rural areas the figures quoted in the tables in the section of the White Paper, Command Paper No. 4289, Britain and the European Communities, an Economic Assessment, agriculture and food, were taken; and with which cities or rural areas in the United Kingdom printed for comparison in the tables they were compared.

Mr. Hoy

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to Table 7, which quotes retail prices of main foodstuffs for October, 1969. For the E.E.C. countries the figures are taken from official national publications giving average prices collected from about 300 places within the Community. For the United Kingdom they are averages of prices collected for the purpose of the Index of Retail Prices from between 500 and 1,000 retailers in 200 areas, and published in the "Department of Employment and Productivity Gazette".
