HC Deb 17 February 1970 vol 796 cc85-6W
Mr. Hobden

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what proportion of the total expenditure by the County Borough of Brighton was met by Government financial aid in each year since 1959 to date; and what is the estimated proportion for the years 196970 and 1970–71.

Mr. Denis Howell

Government grants represented the following proportions of the revenue expenditure by Brighton County Borough Council met by rates and revenue grants, including housing subsidies:

per cent.
1959–60 38.8
1960–61 38.9
1961–62 37.6
1962–63 36.2
1963–64 38.1
1964–65 38.0
1965–66 39.1
1966–67 40.5
1967–68 40.5
1968–69 42.0

The figures for 1967–68 and 1968–69 are not wholly comparable with those for earlier years because the police grant was no longer payable to the county borough council from 1st January, 1968, when responsibility for the police service was transferred to the Sussex Police Authority.

Capital grants represented the following proportions of capital expenditure by the county borough council, other than that met from revenue:

per cent.
1959–60 0.4
1960–61 0.3
1961–62
1962–63
1963–64
1964–65
1965–66
1966–67 0.9
1967–68 1.7
1968–69 4.6

Figures from which grant percentages may be derived for 1969–70 and 1970–71 are not yet available.

Mr. Hobden

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how much Government financial aid was given to the County Borough of Brighton in each year since 1959; and what is the estimated aid to be given in 1969–70 and 1970–71.
