HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 cc373-4W
22. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made in the refurbishing of Wormwood Scrubs Prison; how many outbreaks of bed-bug infestation occurred in this prison in each of the past five years; and what steps are being taken to deal with such infestation more radically than hitherto.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

There were 102,439 convictions in England and Wales in 1968. Fines imposed in over 86,000 of these cases averaged £9. The comparable figures for the first nine months of 1969 were 75,610, just over 64,000, and £9 11s.

Following are the details:

Mr. Elystan Morgan

Eleven reported incidents took place in one wing last year. Figures for earlier years are not readily available.

The infestation should be eliminated completely this autumn when the refurbishing of the wing will be completed.
