HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 c377W
37. Mr. Howie

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many inquests have been held in private in the last five years under the provisions of the Coroners Rules 1953.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

Under Rule 14 of the Coroners Rules, 1953, a coroner is permitted to exclude the public from any inquest only if he considers that it would be in the interests of national security so to do. I am not aware that this limited right to exclude the public has been exercised in recent years.
