HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 c400W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the value of fines imposed by Scottish courts in each of the last three financial years and what is the total presently unpaid; how many defaulters were responsible for this shortfall in each of those years; and how many of these served prison sentences as a result of their failure to pay.

Mr. Ross

I regret that parts of this information are not available. Fines imposed by Scottish criminal courts amounted to £1,294,271 in the calendar year 1966, £1,465,698 in 1967 and £1,516,261 in 1968. The number of persons fined in these years was 152,583, 161,829, and 152,441 and the number of persons admitted to prison in default of payment in those years was 4,891, 6,636 and 6,688.
