HC Deb 09 February 1970 vol 795 cc254-5W
Mr. Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many new units specially built for the care of the younger chronic sick have been completed in the past year; and how many are now under construction;

(2) what is the total number of local authority and hospital board units for the care of the younger chronic sick now in use, and the total number accommodated therein.

Dr. John Dunwoody

There are in National Health Service hospitals in England 26 such units of 10 or more beds, providing a total of 623 beds. Two of these units were opened in the past year and Boards hope that projects now under consideration will provide a further seven units within the next twelve months. Local authorities do not make special provision for the chronic sick as distinct from the physically or mentally disabled.
