HC Deb 09 February 1970 vol 795 cc278-9W
Mr. Buchanan-Smith

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many pigs were exported for slaughter in each of the past three years.

Mr. Mackie

The total number of pigs exported in each of the past three years was:

1967 1968 1969
To Irish Republic 11,735 12,535 14,014
To all other countries 1,355 764 73,788
Total 13,090 13,299 87,802

The overseas trade accounts do not distinguish between pigs exported for breeding and other purposes. My Department's port veterinary officers make returns showing the number of pigs certified fit

1965 1966 1967 1968 1969
To Irish Republic 12,125 7,858 1,571 3,388 5,587
All other countries 6,651 294 168 652 21,928
Total 18,776 8,152 1,739 4,040 27,515

My Department's port veterinary officers make returns showing the number of pigs certified as fit to travel to the Continent for purposes other than breeding. These returns indicate that in the last quarter of 1965 about 7,400 pigs were exported for immediate slaughter. None was exported in the last quarters of 1966, 1967 and 1968; in 1969 about 17,200 were exported for immediate slaughter and about 7,700 for further fattening.
