HC Deb 09 February 1970 vol 795 c254W
Mr. Biffen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he proposes to make an official visit to Lea Castle Hospital, Wolverley; what representations he has received on conditions at the hospital; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Crossman

I have received representations about the suspension of certain services, a temporary standstill in nurse recruitment and about shortage of clothing for patients. The suspension of services is not now to take effect and immediate efforts are being made to recruit additional nurses and to overcome the laundry problems which have led to some difficulties with clothing. The hospital is one of the newest in the country providing for the mentally handicapped and I am advised that the standard of care provided is high. This does not mean it cannot be improved. I shall be making my visit on 1st May.
